Hagerstown CC Women's Soccer (3-4-1) hosted WVU Potomac State (3-3-0) on Tuesday, September 20th for a 2:00 p.m. match.
Hagerstown started the match sluggish, as the Catamounts aggressively attacked the Hawks goal and scored at the fifth minute mark on a goal by Nevaeh Hamborsky (#18), Maggie Slocum (#12) with the assist. Hamborsky scored her second goal fifteen minutes later on an assist by Allysen Miller (#17). Hagerstown started building an attack on the Catamount goal at the fortieth minute when Leah Stevens (#18) was fouled inside the penalty box. Carlie Collis (#5) took the penalty kick, but Potomac State's Hartley VanGilder (#00) made the save to keep the score at 2-0, Catamounts, to end the half.
The Hawks made adjustments in the second half, connecting passes to move the ball down field and creating increased scoring opportunities. In the fifty-fourth minute, Kayda Shives (#4) dribbled past a defender and found the back of the Catamount's net, on an assist by Marissa Fouke (#21). With the score now 2-1, Hagerstown took control of the game, and Diana James (#9) scored on an assist by Mikaila Ek (#7) in the fifty-fifth minute to tie the game at 2-2. The Hawks continued second half pressure in the Catamount's backfield caused turnovers and miscues from Potomac State's defense, and in the seventy-first minute, Shives scored her second goal on an assist by Chloe Bolland (#10) giving Hagerstown the lead, and ultimately the 3-2 win.
Earlier this season the Hawks lost to the Catamounts 5-1, however, today's second half performance by Hagerstown, with 11 shots on goal compared to Potomac State's 4, showed the come back element to their game. "I am so amazed at this team bouncing back from being scored on. We are sustaining a few injuries, and there were players who took their game to another level of performance today", commented Coach Clifton Williams. "Again, we have many players on offense who know how to put the ball in the back of the net, and when you couple that with our defense who is communicating, working together, putting pressure on the ball, and finding the target players, we just keep getting stronger with each game. Let's go Hawks!"
