Monroe 3, HCC 0
HCC 6, Monroe 4
Hagerstown Community College made the best of what it had.
The Hawks used three well-positioned hits — including a clutch one by Tanner Helms — to score a 6-4 win over Monroe (N.Y.) on Sunday in the nightcap of a doubleheader to earn a split.
The Hawks managed just one hit in a 3-0 loss in the opener.
Helms' RBI hit highlighted a critical two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to help HCC (21-17) extend its lead to 6-3 in the nightcap. Enrique Morales added a sacrifice fly to cap the outburst.
HCC used walks, a hit by pitch, wild pitches and a sacrifice fly to establish a 4-3 lead. The Hawks scored twice in the first, added a run in the second and another in the third.
Helms finished with two of the Hawks' three hits, while Doug Cassera drove in two runs. Robbie Houck (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts to get the win.
In the opener, Helms collected a single in the fifth inning as HCC's only hit against Monroe starter Antonio Frias (6-0), who went the distance with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Colby Shimmel (5-2) took the loss for HCC despite throwing a two-hitter. Monroe got both hits — doubles — in a three-run fourth inning.
