LADY HAWKS FALL JUST SHORT AGAINST OWLS, MEN’S TEAM RISES TO THE OCCASION

It was the first of many doubleheader basketball evenings for the Hagerstown CC women's/men's teams last night (12/4) at Prince George's CC. Both teams have had different paths to get where they are this year and were excited for the challenge against the familiar foe.

After making the trip to Largo, the women's team began the night's festivities by jumping out to a 27-23 lead at halftime with the help of F/C Andrea Elder. The freshman captain showcased her talents with an impressive double-double performance (20 PTS/11 REB) and shot 67% from the field. Their lead quickly vanished as the Owls racked up 28 points in the 3rd quarter to the Lady Hawks' 10. After Prince George's flipped the script in the second half, Hagerstown could not regain their momentum and fell to the home team by a final score of 61-51. While Elder was the standout, there were a few other players who chipped in during the respectable performance for HCC. Susie Rodriguez also contributed a double-double with 11 PTS/11 REB, Amelia Robins had 8 PTS/12 REB/7 AST, and Avrie Harr added another 10 boards to go along with her 4 points. While it wasn't a win, the girls grinded throughout the entire game and competed with the 5-0 team for all 40 minutes.

The Hagerstown men's team followed up the women's loss with a stellar performance, building off their last win on Sunday during the Jim Brown Classic. By a final score of 76-66, the Hawks knocked off the Owls in a game they controlled wire to wire. Deondre Mitchell continues to be a galvanizing force in the backcourt for the Hawks as he finished with 24 PTS, including 10-11 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Tristan Cook had his first double-double of the season (10 PTS/10 REB) while Mason Sword added 14 PTS of his own. Najeh Allen was "Mr. Do-It-All" for the Hawks last night too, as he ended with 6 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST, 3 STL, and 2 BLK. This win on the road puts the Hagerstown men over .500 at 6-5 as it seems the team is finding its identity one game at a time. They are building team chemistry brick by brick with solid zone defense and a bench that is the deepest fans have seen in years.

Both the men and women have a quick turnaround as they are back at home this Saturday, December 7th to face another "Hawks" squad from College of Southern Maryland. The women's game is slated to begin at 2PM followed by the men's game at 4PM. Please consider coming out to Jim Brown Court in the ARCC to show support for the home team.
